The Do’s and Don’ts of Hair Extensions
The popularity is growing for clients wishing to enhance their appearance by adding long, luscious hair extensions. With a vast range of hair extensions and hair products on the market, it can cause confusion of what to do to look after them, and what to avoid whilst wearing them and caring for them.
The do’s and don’ts of hair extensions that should always be kept in mind are below –
Do wash hair extensions as you would your own hair. Always shampoo and condition together, and try to allow your hair extensions to air-dry when possible to avoid drying out.
Do use styling products as you would your natural hair. Sprays, mousse, wax and gel can be used on hair extensions, always wash the hair afterwards to keep it in the best condition.
Do braid or tie your hair extensions at night if they are permanently fixed in your head.
Do research which type of hair extensions is the right choice for you. As no two heads of hair are the same, a number of factors should be considered when choosing hair extensions including lifestyle and thickness of hair. It is always recommended to look at the options available for hair extensions and find the best choice and don’t be afraid to ask the supplier for advice.
Don’t colour the hair extensions. All synthetic extensions have already been dyed, and some human hair is colour treated as well, dying it again will lead to it being quite porous and dry, it is best to dye the natural hair on your head to match the colour of the extensions.
Don’t leave clip-in hair extensions in at night. It is always best to remove these as they can become painful if slept on for long amounts of time.
Don’t apply bleach or any form of lightener to hair extensions, it will cause the hair to shed and shorten the life of them.
